Job Description
The Assistant Payroll Manager supports payroll operations and team supervision, helping to improve daily efficiency and meet departmental goals. This role oversees the payroll processing staff to ensure timely, accurate processing in compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations.
Key responsibilities include reviewing payroll entries, verifying calculations, and ensuring regulatory compliance. The Assistant Payroll Manager also supports international students by assisting with tax documentation and residency determinations. This role works closely with other departments to resolve payroll-related issues. The position also serves as a backup during staff absences, ensuring continuity of operations.
This position actively contributes to process improvements and ensures effective and efficient internal controls exist and compliance measures are in place.
Required Qualifications
Progressive payroll experience with knowledge of federal and state payroll laws and tax regulations. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong Excel skills and experience working with a complex payroll system. Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines and adapting to changing workflows. Strong attention to detail with a commitment to data integrity and accuracy. Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills. Supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Payroll experience in state government and/or higher education. Working knowledge of the Banner Human Resources and/or Banner Finance systems. Experience and knowledge of international tax residency determinations.
