Job Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Environmental Health and Safety, the Industrial Hygienist/Laboratory Safety Officer, has primary responsibility for the revision, development and implementation of Radford University’s Laboratory and Biosafety programs to include the Biosafety Policies and the Chemical Hygiene Plan for all departments that carry out laboratory operations. This work involves management of hazardous/regulated substances, both chemical and biological, as well as responding to and investigating exposures. Acting as the subject matter expert in areas such as biosafety, chemical hygiene, laboratory and industrial hygiene, the Officer applies federal, state and University policies in all areas. Working with a varied group of constituents, the IH/Laboratory Safety Officer will serve on various University committees to maintain the department presence and provide guidance to faculty, staff and students

Required Qualifications

Work experience in biosafety, chemical hygiene, industrial hygiene, or laboratory hazards. Experience with Occupational Safety Health Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, Department Environmental Quality, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Virginia Department of Health, National Institute of Health, Center for Disease Control, or other pertinent federal, state, and local regulatory requirements. Experience with computers, specifically with Microsoft Office Programs.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference given for prior experience in the Environmental Health and Safety field. Preference given for demonstrated knowledge in biological and chemical safety.
Certification as an Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer (CCHO), Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) and/or Certified Biosafety Professional (CBSP)
Higher Education or research environment experience and experience in conducting training programs preferred.
