Job Summary

The Academic Year (9-month) Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor is responsible for providing substance use disorder assessments with volunteer and mandated students, administering BASICS, and incorporating a brief therapeutic model to address the emotional and behavioral needs of students. The position will create developmental programming to increase healthy lifestyle and coping behaviors across campus and provide supervision to master level interns. Responsibilities include intake, assessment, time limited individual counseling, group counseling, outreach, consultation, and crisis intervention. This position will also be responsible for collaborating with colleagues throughout the college and contributing to departmental, student services, retention, and college growth.

Required Qualifications

Advanced degree in counseling, psychology, clinical social work or related field. Licensed or licensed eligible in mental health related discipline in the state of Virginia. Experience administering BASICS or other evidence based programs for repeat alcohol and other drug offenders. Training or experience in clinical supervision of graduate level trainees. Working knowledge of counseling theory and techniques. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues. Ability to treat all people equitably and with a sensitivity and awareness to cultural differences. Considerable knowledge of professional ethics and the ability to apply to current work. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Self-motivated with demonstrated understanding of the developmental issues of college students.

Preferred Qualifications

Current Substance Abuse Certification. Current licensure in the state of Virginia (i.e. LPC or LCSW). Experience working in a college/university counseling setting. Experience developing a Collegiate Recovery Program and/or working with a Collegiate Recovery Community. Certification to facilitate SMART Recovery meetings. Experience with electronic mental health records.
